Plans to unite the internet and telephone network are under way. Nominet the company that administer the .uk internet domain have begun work to interconnect the networks. The newly established Enum directory is likely to result in a boom in net telephony. It will make looking for phone numbers like finding a website and is said to replicate what the Domain Name System did for the World Wide Web for telephone numbers.

This move toward telephone number mapping has been compared to the moment when different mobile phone operators let text messages travel between their networks. The Technical director of Nominet said, "It's going to change the business model for communication providers quite seriously." But critics have raised concerns about the security of this service especially in terms of personal privacy.

Mr Daley recognised these fears and stated "Do I really want people to find out which of my devices I am on at the moment?" He also stated that he did not want people to know what IP address he is on at any one time. Germany, Ireland and Australia have already started developing their Enum directories.

The service will have an immediate benefit to companies that utilise the UK's voice over IP (VoIP) network.  Typically this has been used for internal phone systems but the new developments will make it easier to link with other companies that route their calls through the web. Previously there was no way to find other companies on this system with only a phone number. This service will provide the missing link.
