Yahoo –WebCal –Broadcast

The history of the Internet is littered with fantastic new innovations and new portals that are popularized by millions of users, every year some new innovation explodes onto the Internet and large search facilities then acquire them. Early Yahoo acquisitions include WebCal and Broadcast.com.

During 2001 and 2002 the acquisition strategy continued with Yahoo buying Launch Media and Hot Jobs, the roll out into world regions continues relentlessly and Yahoo grows more powerful by the month. A new benchmark was set in 2002 with the acquisition of Inktomi, this was a benchmark due to that fact that Inktomi was already an established internet facility but the purchase was about the search technology that Inktomi possessed.

Inktomi was classified as ‘a pioneer in algorithmic Web search technology’, and had been about since 1996, this was to be the first of many cannibalistic acquisitions by established web portals.

Between 1996 and 2003 competitors had established themselves striving to serve the growing demand for information from the Internet by a diverse set of communities. Some of these facilities became very popular during the rapid expansion but also lost their way and succumbed to financial pressures. These debt laden facilities would fall from great heights to become vulnerable and ripe for acquisition, once mighty names would find themselves realigned into the brand portfolios of giants such as Yahoo, MSN and Google.
