Wiimote for XBox 360?

Rumours are abound in the gaming industry after MTV received information from a undisclosed source that a ‘Wiimote’ style controller for the XBox 360 could be on the shelves as soon as this year. MTV claim that their source is involved in the development of this ‘Wiimote-esque’ controller that seemingly is a copy of the Nintendo design.
It is understood that British developers Rare are working on this new interface and hope that it will be a viable ‘waggling’ control option for games such as Halo, Gears of War and Forza Motorsport. After the success of Nintendo’s Wii in bringing gamers of all ages together it is unsurprising that Microsoft are trying to take a slice of the lucrative family gaming market.
The leak claims that the new controller will strongly resemble the ‘Wiimote’ but will have an analogue control as well as a microphone in addition. The move is not just about adapting Microsoft’s game developer base, but instead is an attempt to coax the developers of Wii games to consider releasing their titles on the 360. It is yet another drive towards capturing the ‘casual’ gaming market that all three consoles are ardently pursuing.
But will this piece of kit actually add anything to the XBox 360? Does it really need this kind of gimmick? Microsoft hasn’t yet made any comments on the rumour but undoubtedly a statement will be forthcoming once development is more assured. Whether the interface will make to the shelves this year is questionable, Rare have a history of failing to meet deadlines. Most likely it is the Christmas markets that will be the target and if they manage to develop the controller by then it may see a host of Wii games heading over to the XBox.
