What’s on the way in 2008?

2007 was the year of Facebook, the Apple iPhone and the Nintendo Wii. So what’s in store for 2008?

Ultra Mobile PCs

Despite numerous efforts by a number of companies the gap between small hand-held Personal Digital Assistants and full blown laptops has still not been bridged. Perhaps 2008 will be the year for the ultra mobile PC. In the past they have been unsuccessful because of poor memory capacity and short battery life but a Taiwanese manufacturer have managed to improve these problems with a product that costs less than £200. The Asus EEE is about the size of a hardback book and provides a portable solution. With Apple also set to release an ultra thin Macbook in 2008 expect to see more Ultra Mobile PCs around.

IPTV

Somewhat surprisingly TV on the internet has never really hit off. The reason is that internet TV requires an extremely fast internet connection to be reliable. This year ADSL2+ comes online and will offer broadband speeds up to 24megabits per second (mbps). Typically households have a connection that offers 4mbps. The BBC has recognised that the future is online and is pushing the iPlayer a feature that allows people to watch repeats of their shows online. It is only a matter of time before they transmit live.

Mobile VOIP

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is the technology that enables people to make cheap phone calls over the internet. Skype has let people talk through the internet at a very low cost but there has only been a small amount of activity to make this technology accessible by mobile phones. Mobile phone companies are yet to embrace it possibly because it could make phone calls significantly cheaper. Perhaps 2008 will see the technology introduced on a large scale.
