Update On Microsoft Versus Yahoo

The wrangling over Microsoft’s bid to take over Yahoo continues today with more tactics being deployed by both sides.
Yahoo have enlisted the help of Google in a bid to stave off a hostile takeover by Microsoft and the two have joined in an experimental drive that will see them share advertising space for two weeks. Three per cent of the search results on Yahoo will see a Google ad beside them and this is reportedly either to frustrate Microsoft or force them to up their offer.
This does not necessarily constitute and on-going partnership or deal of any kind but the news has been welcomed by Yahoo investors and shares have risen seven per cent. There is also the possibility that Yahoo could join forces with Time Warner’s AOL. This would see Time Warner investing cash worth 20% of the merged company, allowing Yahoo to buy back shares.
Microsoft have also sought outside backing for their bid for the Yahoo business. Discussions have allegedly taken place with News Corp to make a joint bid for the company, thus combining the world’s three most visited sites – MySpace, Yahoo and MSN.com. News Corp, it would seem, have swapped camps and are desperate for a piece of the action. It was not long ago that they discussed working with Yahoo itself to keep Microsoft out of the picture.
It is not expected that the latest Yahoo attempts will be a long term fix but watch this space for further instalments.
