Ofcom To ask For More Honesty From ISPs

Consumer satisfaction with Internet Service Providers has been slipping of late.

Broadband providers market their services with a view to supplying the fastest broadband service above all others. However, research shows that if you buy 8Mbit/s, you are actually quite unlikely to ever get more than 4Mbit/s.

Broadband speeds are affected by various factors including distance from exchange and network status but this is not made clear to consumers. Once contracts are signed, with the customer believing they will be getting the ultimate speed and performance from their ISP, they are then committed for at least 12 months.

Ofcom consumer panel are saying this is unfair because ISP’s are not being completely honest with customers. They are calling for a new code of practice to cover all ISP’s, forcing them to contact customers two weeks after their line is activated to see if they are happy with the service. If not, they should be obliged to release the customer from their agreement so they are free to shop around.

In a recent study, Virgin Media came out top for their broadband speed with its package that comes with claims of providing ‘up to 20mbit/s’ actually reaching 7.3Mbit/s in most areas.
