New Nano Brain Brings AI Closer

The world of nanotechnology is one step closer today; a miniscule chemical “brain” has been developed that could one day control millions of nanobots at once. The device, which operates at the molecular level is just two billionths of a metre across and in recent test was able to control eight nano-machines simultaneously. The belief is that this type of technology will be able to increase the processing power of future computers astronomically.

Applications for the technology are diverse, in medicine it is believed that the tiny machines will be able to enter the body and carry out complex operations without the need for surgery, subsequently minimising any risks of infection. This ‘brain’ will hopefully allow the micro machines to act under their own steam and target the affected area without the need for detailed programming or guidance. The idea is truly revolutionary and heralds a new world in medicine as well as other industries.

The machine is constructed from molecules of Duroquinone and has been referred to as a ‘logic device.’ Groups of these molecules are connected together with one at the centre that acts to control the others. By making changes to the central molecule it is believed that the connecting molecules will follow suit. The design is heavily influenced by the layout of our own brain showing that nature truly is the blueprint for technological development.

From this brain it is possible to control nano-machines carrying out many functions simultaneously. At the moment a CPU in a computer is only able to carry out one function at a time, this new technology will be able to carry out much more than a single function. At the moment the technology is in it infancy and hence workable developments are still a long way away. As the theory is so far removed from existing computer technology the applications will be extremely limited for the foreseeable future.

The work does carry promise however and the further it develops, it will eventually become workable with existing technology. Whatever the present thought on the issue, these new technologies do stand as the avant garde of the technological world and are at the cusp of a revolution.
