Mozilla Break World Record For Download

Mozilla have reason to celebrate today as they have officially made it into the Guinness Book of Records after setting the record for the largest number of software downloads in a twenty four hour period at 8,002,530.

The web browser, Firefox 3.0, has proved to be more popular than Mozilla could ever have dreamed of and they are now in second position to Microsoft’s Internet Explorer with 19% of the market share, which is set to rise in the coming months.

The record was not set without a few hair-raising hiccups along the way. Visitors bombarded the server checking to see if the new version of Firefox was available and it suffered a temporary collapse due to these vast numbers. There was also a problem picked up by a security company that suggested a potential flaw that would allow an attacker to hijack a PC if a user clicked on a booby-trapped link.

However, problems were ironed out and at one point the servers were busy handling more than 9,000 downloads of Firefox 3.0 per minute which saw the 1.6 million Firefox 2.0 version from 2006 outnumbered within five hours.

Firefox 2.0 will be supported until December this year, when users will be expected to switch to version 3.0. This is not an anticipated problem as the count for downloading Firefox 3.0 is already up to 28 million.
