It's A Phone Jim, But Not As We Know It.

Technology moves at a fast pace and we often find that what was once the most popular product or application slowly goes into decline, finally ending up in a Room 101 for gadgets, gizmo’s and software with too many glitches. Beta Max and the Sinclair C5 are fine examples, but would you ever expect the mobile phone to be joining them? New designs are on the horizon that may well change the face of the mobile phone forever in the battle of functionality over form.
A recent survey conducted by Mformation, not the Family Fortunes research team, has uncovered the horrifying truth that the majority of mobile phone owners are not using their phone to the full potential. A staggering 85 per cent of owners reported frustration with high tech handsets, with 61 per cent saying that configuring a new phone and all its services were akin to the trials and tribulations of setting up a new bank account.
This has prompted software developers to come up with new interfaces, such as the type used in the iPhone. By having an icon for each function on a home screen; apparently the user is more likely to attempt to use all the functions within a phone than if the applications are within a sub menu. The reason for getting the frustrated masses to embrace web browsing, photo sharing and you-tube watching online is because phone calls and texting are in decline, and the phone companies need to make a profit from easily accessible web applications and expensive high tech handsets.
New generations of mobile phones are catering for users that want an all in one gadget for surfing the net, chatting on Facebook, taking photos, listening to music, watching films and navigating via GPS. A few years ago asking for the moon on a stick would have seemed more achievable. Nowadays it appears that texting and phone calls are just a small side dish of the technology buffet, prompting developers today to question the functions of a phone for the future. Unless they get the technology right, the general public will turn their back on the next generation of communication devices-cum-handheld computers, even if they are cool enough to be on the set of Star Trek, resulting in huge financial losses for communication companies worldwide.
