iPod Set To Take Over The Text Book

The term ‘iPod generation’ is often bandied about the media, more often than not in relation to the antics of a given age group. That is all about to change however as the iPod becomes firmly fixed in the next generation of educational tools for university students.
Radiography students at the University of Derby in the UK have each been given an iPod pre-loaded with radiography tutorials to enhance the learning potential outside of the classroom. The aim is to use the media player as another platform to present information, with the emphasis being on the success of gaining knowledge through an audio-visual medium. This is particularly suited to teaching the students the correct way to position patients ready for an x-ray.
Although the palm sized player is not about to take over the traditional text book, the introduction of its use in an educational establishment is surely a sign of things to come. Using new technology to present information to students is proving to be a success even within such a short amount of time. The feedback has been positive with students claiming that the mode of presentation makes the information easier to learn and retain.
How the use of the £99 iPod will be received by the radiology department’s patients remains to be seen. In the meantime, students are being encouraged to swot up prior to carrying out an x-ray, but to keep the media players hidden from patient’s view during a session as it could give the impression of being unprofessional. Surely it is only a matter of time before this technology is commonly used throughout all learning environments and welcomed with open arms where patients or clients demand peace of mind from a professional practice.
