Instant Internet Access Not Just A Pipe Dream

You know how infuriating it is when, first thing in the morning you arrive at work, turn on your computer and sit for what feels like an age waiting for it to ‘fire up’. Or you’re at home in the evening and want to just quickly check something out on the net. Waiting for the computer to wind itself up feels like it takes an age!
All that could be coming to an end with a new component that promises to make micro chips smaller and more efficient. ‘Memristors’ were first created in the early Seventies and made up the fourth building block of basic circuits after capacitors, resistors and inductors.
What’s new and so exciting about this new development is the memristors ability to retain information after the power source has been removed. This promises to revolutionise computer memories, giving them the power to immediately return to where they were before being switched off.
The dynamic random access memory that is currently used loses data as soon as the power source is removed but with memristors installed, the computer will fire up, not only instantly, but to the point it was when you turned it off. Business will become quicker and easier, data will not be lost and it also brings about the capacity to create laptops that keep the last session logged after the battery dies or mobile phones that could hold a charge for weeks at a time.
By putting tow of these devices together you then create what’s known as a crossbar latch will work like a transistor but work differently. It means the possibility to make them smaller is within reach and as they get smaller, they just get better.
Computer chips change year on year and the possibilities this creates promise to make huge differences to the electronics industry. As with most things, people in the know want to see more experimental use of the new chip before they use it widely but the time will soon be here when instant access to the internet is not just a dream.
