Google Searches Of The Year

Google recently released its fastest growing search terms for 2007, instead of compiling the list through search entries alone, Google have collated the list along the lines of growing numbers of searches. This filters out some of the ‘Britney’ background noise and gives a valuable insight into fashions throughout the year. Usually coming at the end of the year the list is slightly early in its announcement but with 2008 not far away it gives a representation of the trends present during 2007.

Flying at the top of the list is the ‘I-phone’, not even a word in 2006 this shows how popular the little device has become. The media hype surrounding the phone’s launch, as arguably the most anticipated phone ever has obviously resulted in many searching about it. Apple can be pleased that their press campaign was successful.

Others trends visible in the top ten is the dominance of the social networking websites. For kids the safe ‘Club Penguin’ site has made it to sixth place whilst ‘My Space’ and ‘Facebook’ are seventh and ninth respectively. This shows a general pattern of people being evermore willing to have online communications.

A few surprises are clear in the list and the online teddy bear site ‘Webkinz’ is certainly one of them, offering the chance to own an online pet. Another surprise is Anna Nicole Smith, although considering her untimely death earlier in the year it is understandable.

Other entries are a result of the growing popularity of movies and television, two such examples are ‘Transformers’ (the robots in disguise) and ‘Heroes’ (a popular marvel TV series). ‘TMZ’, a popular celebrity news site has placed third in the list showing our world is still obsessed with fame and celebrity. While the old favourite ‘You Tube’ is still there representing the modern need for on demand visual entertainment.

Overall these search terms, while only a list, illustrate what interests the modern world. The trends it highlights truly represent popularity this year, be it film, television, celebrity or website this is a list to get onto if you are to be counted as contemporarily fashionable.
