Google Buzz: 5 Points For, 5 Points Against

Few of us in SEO or indeed any part of the internet marketing community can afford to miss the significance of Google’s foray into the world of social media with its Buzz platform. In this post we’ll summarize some of the main arguments for and against the new kid on the block that are currently popping up around the net. Buzz content is intended to be indexed by Google in search, so it is a hot topic among SEO specialists.

Google Buzz: 5 Arguments Against

1. Buzz does not currently fully integrate will Twitter or Facebook – a fact that many see as an automatic fail. People are unlikely to wish to switch to Buzz when Facebook already provides all they want, and all their friends are on it. It will find it hard to compete with Twitter too, as it offers a simple, fast and effective platform that might not easily be bettered.

2. Google Buzz could cause us all to over-share information about ourselves in a way that some see as a risk; Google is already playing too much of a role in our lives. Criticisms about privacy are already faced by Facebook; will Google address these fears?

3. The new social media entrant is too late, and will never be able to overthrow the mighty Twitter and the even mightier Facebook.

4. Buzz is simply a way to share photos and links from Gmail – at best it is a replacement for little used FriendFeed.

5. Buzz was invented for Google, not for the User. It is the expression of Google’s fear of the growing power enjoyed by Facebook.

Google Buzz: 5 Arguments For

1. Google Buzz is another step towards aggregating other people’s social content, something the company is good at. The platform can bring together a wide range of data types (eg. Twitter, Flickr etc.).

2. Buzz has a very wide distribution in a localised context, and is very effective in connecting messages to places.

3. Google have the advantage of automatically giving their tens of millions of Gmail users a Buzz account, thereby bringing together email and social content in a way Facebook currently cannot (although it is planning to launch its own webmail service).

4. The Gmail basis for Buzz means this could be a social networking system where people can share with only their best friends, as opposed to scores of acquaintances as with Facebook. It could make people more comfortable about sharing their data.

5. Google Buzz is good for social networking as it keeps all the social networking market energised in a way that only fierce competition can. Neither Facebook, nor Twitter, nor Buzz can afford to rest on whatever laurels they have.

Does Google Buzz Scare Facebook or Twitter?

Arguments for and against Google Buzz will emerge and change very quickly over the next few days, as more and more people will be looking for create accounts  - or use the ones that have automatically been given to them through their Gmail accounts. Whether Buzz represents a real challenge to the success of Facebook or Twitter remains to be seen.
