Falling In Love Face-To-Face

Whoever said looks don’t count! Recent studies reveal that we truly do judge people on face value as potential committed partners. The attitude to relationships in general is given away by the look on your face – so it has been claimed. The recent research revealed that men have a preference over women who appear to have a preference over short-term relationships than women who appear to want long-term commitment.

Women view men with bigger jaws and small eyes to be less committed, in which studies have also shown that these women find them less attractive. The Universities of Aberdeen and St Andrews conducted the research, in collaboration with Durham University, with approximately 700 people in their 20s. The results followed people were able to make judgements on their partner selection, which is dependent upon the type of relationship they were after, based on their perceptions.

The tests involved a group of heterosexual participants shown a various pairs of photographs of both men and women in their 20s. They were then asked to choose the faces they perceived to be more likely open to one night stands and short-term relationships. In addition, they were asked to choose the faces who they felt naturally attracted to, were more attractive for both a short or long-term relationship and who appeared more masculine or feminine.

Researchers found that more people were able to judge accurately the faces of those who are more interested in short-term or long-term relationships, as the subjects had already completed a questionnaire with their actual preferences. Others see the women who are more open to short-term relationships as more attractive. This further determines that our subconscious is not always accurate, but provides a reasonable point for judgement.

This could also be our way of judging for potential mates of potential enemies. Previous studies have involved judging someone’s health and certain personality traits based on the way their face looks. This is the first time that studies have been made on facial appearance corresponding to their relationship preferences.

However, some may find women who prefer short-term relationships attractive, it would appear that women are more attracted to men who are open to long-term relationships. In fact, the men that prefer short-term relationships are not seen as attractive to women. Men however should not see this as a cue to gain a relationship based appearances alone, as women are the ones who make the choice in the end.
