Enhance Your World With Augmented Reality

wikitudeThe news this week has been ablaze with a variety of stories that reflect our ever deepening need for technological immersion. My personal favourite is a new mobile phone that promises to enhance the reality around us. The new virtually virtual reality phone from Nokia will use every application at its disposal to label the world with digital features such as the height of a building, the name of passing person and even identify the stars in the sky. It is essentially a Wikipedia overlay for the world.

Whilst still in development, there is already something similar available for Android phones, which gives data on surroundings, but the technology doesn’t stretch to human interaction. The new phone will not only name the people around you, if they choose to make this information known by turning on compatible software, it will let you know if you have shared interests; and it will even alert you if a friend has passed by without you noticing.

Whilst the enhanced or augmented reality offered by the handset is the latest in a long list of applications that have little or nothing to do with making phone calls, it offers an interesting preview of the future. There will come a time when we will only need one gadget that can fulfil our desire for information at any time and any place, and optimise socialising strategies. The final result is bound to be a twitter style encyclopaedic curtain that can be draped over any object we choose.
