Google Voice Search Could Be Winning Factor In Mobile Search Capabilities

Monday, den 30. November 2009

phoneIt is no secret that Google is the world’s most popular search engine and favoured platform for search engine marketing activities; but with demand for mobile search capabilities on the increase, the company may need to corner an altogether different market to stay ahead of competitors. Latest statistics reveal that people in densely populated countries such as India and China use mobile phones more than computers to access information, and as such, Google is finding itself up against Nokia, Apple and now the Chinese search engine Baidu.

Early Spike in Black Friday Search Queries

Thursday, den 26. November 2009

There has been a large increase in search queries for ‘Black Friday’ items in the USA. Black Friday is the term used for the Friday following Thanksgiving in November, a day that many people take off as holiday – and as a consequence there is a huge spike in online shopping activity. Data collected by Google Trends suggests the spike is occurring earlier this year; perhaps because people are seeking out deal early due to the poor economic outlook, or possibly because retailers know the potential Black Friday has for generating sales, and are embracing it with special offers.

Google Analytics Intelligence

Wednesday, den 25. November 2009

This month, Google launched Google Analytics Intelligence, a new tool for analysing website traffic metrics.

intelligence

Google Analytics produces a multitude of data to sift through and, whilst it provides some great tools as to how traffic is behaving on your website, potentially revealing information can in theory be overlooked by an analyst monitoring multiple or complex websites.

Google Analytics Intelligence, in short, works as a virtual assistant, drawing site owners’ attention to deviations from overall trends in website traffic that may otherwise have been missed. For example, if the bounce rate on your website landing page suddenly shoots up above the normal deviation from the mean average, Google Analytics Intelligence will alert you.

Claims That Bing Censored Chinese Results

Tuesday, den 24. November 2009

It has been claimed by a New York Times journalist that Bing has been censoring its Chinese results in an effort to appease the Beijing Government. Nicholas Kristof said Beijing is “sacrificing the integrity of Bing searches so as to cozy up to State Security in Beijing.”

In an effort to rebuff these claims, Microsoft put out a blog post titled ‘commitment to comprehensive results’. In the post they claimed they have rectified a bug over the summer period (that Kristof’s claims relate to) and are currently working to fix another that appeared over the weekend. It should be resolved by Thursday 26th November.

Twitter Not For Sale

Tuesday, den 24. November 2009

PhotobucketAlthough it seems that much of the current talk around microblogging phenomenon Twitter is about the development of an array of revenue streams, co-founder Biz Stone has denied that the company is for sale.

At an Oxford University event this weekend, Stone categorically denied that Twitter was looking to sell to the likes of Microsoft or Facebook, though he did hint at the potential of following in Google’s footsteps and taking the company public. He told reporters at the event that ‘We are definitely not interested in selling the company’.

SEO Strategies To Consider Page Load Time

Tuesday, den 24. November 2009

pageloadPage load time is a frustrating fact for internet users, but it is set to be punishable next year according to hints made my Google’s Matt Cutts. Algorithm changes scheduled for 2010 could include page load time to be taken into account to help high quality sites rank higher than spammy pages. This will improve usability and bring up web pages that are likely to be more genuine, and what users are actually looking for. In terms of SEO this means that back end architectural work needs to be a core focus to improve optimisation.

The Winner Is The One With The Most Gold Stars

Monday, den 23. November 2009

goldstarGoogle appears to have made another beta transformation to its Pay Per Click service, but this time the change has been made to the AdSense adverts in the hope of increasing the Click Through Rate that customers and clients receive. The new update takes a page straight out of the eighties playbook as Google goes back to school with the new gold star system.

Back when I went to primary school the teachers would reward students for good behaviour by giving us a gold star on our work. It now appears as though one of my former class-mates has managed to land a job working for Google, as the internet giant is about to start rewarding AdSense adverts for their quality and relevancy with a coveted gold star.

Twitter Adds Photo Support For UK Users

Tuesday, den 17. November 2009

PhotobucketMicroblogging phenomenon Twitter has added support for MMS picture messaging to its service – but only for UK users.

Twitter has allowed users to update their status on the go with text messages for a long time, which is partially credited with its success, allowing users to tell people what they’re doing at almost any time of the day or night providing they had their phone on them, but there was no similar support for pictures. Consequently, sites such as Twitpic and Twitxr have been used when people feel the need to share their pictures, and while they work fine, the ability to post pictures directly from phones via MMS would certainly offer more convenience for users who aren’t equipped with smartphones like BlackBerry’s or iPhones.

Google Purchases Gizmo5 To Rival Skype

Monday, den 16. November 2009

Google-Voice-LogoGoogle last Thursday announced their acquisition of Gizmo5, a Californian-based VoIP communications network that deals with internet voice calls and instant messaging. With its growing range of communication services it will be interesting to see what Google’s long term plans will be with this purchase.

Currently the search engine already offers Google Voice in the United States as well as Google Talk and Gmail services Worldwide. The attainment of Gizmo5 will give Google the technologies for complete management of voice, video and text communications. It has been reported earlier last week by TechCrunch that this has cost Google a purchase price of around 30 million dollars.
