Real-Time Search

Bing’s recent collaboration with Twitter (named Bing Twitter) is an example of real time search entering the conscious of those not in the know, attempting to improve the popularity and usability of this chronological way of searching information.

Although Bing Twitter is in the early stages of beta, High Position has finally been able to have a play with it and has noticed some interesting features.

Firstly, at the top of the screen, below the search box, there is a tag cloud containing ‘hottest topics’.

Will Yahoo’s Search Interface Be Enough To Retain Users?

“It’s a shame Yahoo is abdicating” Google’s co-founder Sergey Brinn has said in an interview at a Web 2.0 event in San Francisco. His choice of words demonstrate the position that Yahoo will, in many people’s eyes, be giving up when it switches off its back end search technology.

But while Yahoo will be using Bing to power its search (providing the deal is approved) it has made big noises about innovations in the way that search service will be delivered. In an Earnings Call earlier in the week Yahoo’s CFO Tim Morse used the analogy of the Intel chip; computer manufacturer brands such as Dell, HP and Apple all use Intel chips, and yet the user’s experience of these computer can vary a great deal.

Link Wheeling Your Site

wheelieThe link wheel is one of the hot topics in the world of search engine optimisation at the moment, and there’s little doubt of their effectiveness when it comes to driving traffic to your site and increasing brand awareness, but what is a link wheel and how does it work?

Link Wheels

In its simplest terms, a link wheel is a series of independent, unique web properties, ideally with a high PageRank and degree of authority, which link back to your site. At the moment, this doesn’t sound too different to a regular linking campaign, but the next stage is where the wheel aspect comes into play: as well as linking to the target site, the sites in question also link to the site next to them in the wheel, creating a series of ’spokes’ which lead to the ‘axle’ or ‘hub’, which is the target site.

Twitter Search: What Are The Realtime Alternatives?

Realtime Alternatives

Real Time Relevancy

Google is concerned about real time search, make no mistake about it – that is why they have set up a similar agreement with Twitter to that made by MSN powered search engine, Bing.

Although there is no algorithm in place to filter relevant results, as with Google, Yahoo Search, Bing etc, real time search has its uses, and as more and more people use social media as part of their everyday life, it will be used even more.

Twitter Strikes Deal With Bing

Bing Twitter

Realtime Search

Yesterday at the 2009 Web 2.0 conference in San Francisco Microsoft announced that they have struck a deal with Twitter to stream their realtime data. Once again this thrusts the issue of realtime search into the limelight, as Bing will be utilising the Twitter ‘firehose’ of instantaneous updates.

This made Bing the first search engine to have access to the realtime data and they have opted to set up a separate search tool at bing.com/twitter, which will allow users to specifically search twitter data. It is effectively a rebranded Twitter Search and is purely an immediate response to the deal, however we are currently unable to run any tests on it:

Tests conducted by prominent SEO specialists have revealed that Yahoo does indeed index the meta tag keyword. In a response to subsequent concerns from Search Engine Land’s Danny Sullivan, Yahoo stated: “the ranking importance given to meta keyword tags receives the lowest ranking signal in our system.”

Is Social Media Branding Effective?

TwiteerFacebook

Social Marketing

Brands are seemingly stepping up their social media marketing, particularly on Facebook, and whilst increasing brand awareness is never a bad move, is there any real point to creating fan groups via social media? By looking at the two big hitters in social marketing – Facebook and Twitter – we can discuss their relevancy in online marketing at present.

Facebook users may well become ‘fans’ of a certain product for different rationales, one of the main factors will be for nostalgic reasons, yet this will mainly be for famous brands such as Coca-Cola, Adidas, Pringles, Gillette etc – global brands that do not need to target brand awareness.
