On the 8th of October 2007 the Google share price crossed the $600 dollar mark. It represented a landmark to traders and exceeded the expectations of market analysts. The company share prices have gained 41% this year. Pacific Crest Securities manager Steve Weinstein has predicted that this rate of growth will continue into 2008 with his predictions suggesting shares will reach $850 by this time next year. The growth represents the levels of confidence investors have in the world’s most popular search engine.

future of Microsoft

Bill Gates’ right hand man Steve Ballmer has outlined the future of Microsoft as “advertising, advertising, advertising!”. Set to run the company when Bill Gates steps down next year the Microsoft junior partner has provided a strong indication as to which direction Microsoft will turn to stay relevant in the rapidly changing technology industry.

The company are currently pushing open-source and online software to compete with its competitors. Microsoft have just released a web based feature for Office that enables the user to edit documents from different computers and share documents. This trend is expected to result in ‘web based software’ or ’software-as-a-service’ taking over from shrink wrapped software within five years. Improving their existing services is only part of the plan.

Internet ad-spend beats expectations

The news is good for High Position as market trends demonstrate record growth in online advertising for the first half of 2007. The figures published in a report by Internet Advertising Bureau, PricewaterhouseCoopers and the World Advertising Research Centre suggest the future will remain positive with the industry expected to grow to unprecedented levels in the coming year.

The report shows that £1.3billion was spent on online advertising compared to £917.2million in the same period last year. That represents a growth of 41.3%; a rate of growth that Guy Phillipson the chief executive of IAB has called “Astounding”.
