Content Based Link Building In Search Engine Optimisation

Link Building

Link BuildingIn the world of search engine optimisation the process of link building is seen as one of the most important activities in the advancement of search engine rankings. Link building itself can be separated into distinct areas; for the purpose of this blog article, the focus will be content based link building.

In the early days of search engine optimisation link building was a somewhat simple and indiscriminate affair. SEOs could simply build links almost anywhere and see results; this was also true in the area of content based link building, where the location of links mattered less than the fact that these links were present and visible. As the search engine algorithms became more advanced however, indiscriminate linking had to be phased out, replaced by a far more conscientious and more labour intensive process.

Content Based

This has been especially true in the area of content based link building. In past years, SEOs would utilise automated distribution systems for their content based linking; in some cases this is still prevalent across much of the industry it is gradually being replaced with different strategies.  This form of link building relied upon one major ethos; that the number of links was the fundamental factor that swayed search engines into increasing page rankings for various search terms.

In recent years this opinion has changed. Those in the search engine optimisation industry are beginning to realise that link building is becoming less about quality, and more about quality. This change in emphasis is across the board in terms of linking although it has had specific developments in terms of content based link building.

Authoritative Backlinks

SEO practitioners have had to negate the effects of automated distribution services. Essentially the worth of these services has been devalued by the fact they use similar if not identical distribution lists for the submitted articles and blogs. Search engines see many of the sites contained on the distribution lists as worthless and hence do not regard the links as authoritative. Subsequently SEOs are now better served by sourcing respectable websites which accept content based links as these sites are more likely to provide quality, authoritative backlinks.

Another development in the area of content based linking is that as many automated distribution services rely upon one article or blog reproduced numerous times, search engine duplication filters are further devaluing backlinks from duplicate information. Subsequently an emphasis on unique written information is now evident.

These two developments do not represent changes in content based link building in its entirety but give an idea of how a qualitative approach has replaced quantitative strategies.
