Met Crime Statistics Shocker!

Tuesday, den 18. August 2009

image677810xThe Mets own crime statistics show that domestic violence has increased over the space of 12 months by a whopping 41.2%. According to their figures released earlier this year, the 12 months leading up to December 2008 showed 72,059 domestic violence crimes in the UK.

I’d like to specify here that this means over 72, 059 cases made it before a court with a favourable outcome for the victim. Now, police claim that they receive one call every minute in relation to a domestic violence case, in theory meaning that there are potentially 525,600 times per year where somebody will suffer at the hands of a partner or former partner. This leaves us with a shortfall of over 450,000 domestic violence incidents that will go unpunished.

Temporary Reduction In Spam

Thursday, den 13. November 2008

Those web users sick to death of spam mail can breathe a sigh of relief, temporarily anyway.
A web hosting firm that was reported to list spam gangs as clients has been closed down in the US after an investigation by the Washington Post newspaper and Ironport, an anti-span company, say that since this event junk email levels have dropped by 70 per cent.

The company in question, McColo was taken offline on 11th November and this immediately led to the junk mail reduction but the respite will be short lived. It is all thanks to an in-depth investigation over four months by the Washington Post who then passed the information to their ISP, global Crossing and Hurricane Electric, who then decided to close the company.

BT may still have the monopoly when it comes to telephone communications, but with new innovations becoming apparent every day, they may fast be losing their edge. Internet and email are no longer solely reliant on a BT line but they have kept the upper hand when it comes to actually chatting live with others. Not for much longer.

Google are introducing a new service to users of Gmail. Already a free email service, new tools will be made available to customers to enable them to use a video and audio channel in conjunction with their email.

A military computer designed to run virtual nuclear weapons tests has set a new speed record in America and comes from IBM and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).

The IBM machine has been built using components designed for Sony’s Playstation 3 and has been named Roadrunner. It has beaten all records set by other computers by processing more than one thousand trillion calculations per second. To put this into some perspective, the calculations that this one computer can do in one day would take the entire world’s population a total of 46 years to do with a standard computer.

Apples Commitment To Customer Service

Friday, den 30. May 2008

You know there’s nothing worse than getting mid-call on your iPhone or mid-tune on your iPod and running out of battery. And with our ever hectic lives, being near a power supply to re-charge them is not always convenient. But that problem could be about to end.

Apples are working on solar powered technology for iPhones and iPods, filing a patent to stack solar cells under a touch sensitive screen. The problem previously faced by manufacturers when it comes to solar powered technology is the amount of room needed for incorporating solar cells as well as having enough space for buttons and a screen and not having it obscured by your hands. Placing the solar cells beneath the screen overcomes this problem.

Technology For The Aged

Tuesday, den 22. April 2008

For those of us young enough to understand emails, iPods and webcams, there is no need to fear our old age. Tales of leaving our own hard-earned home behind and submitting ourselves to the often understaffed care homes will be a thing of the past with what visionaries hope will become the norm – the virtual granny flat.

Using high tech devices such as video conferencing for keeping in touch with friends and family to micro chips that detect wandering or falling elderly and infirm, these are the things that scientists hope will keep us in our own homes for longer.
