Apple iTunes Biggest Seller In The US

Seeing an iPod is very common amongst people. It was not that long ago that people used to carry portable CD players, now this is almost unheard with the rise of MP3 players and iPods. Downloading music from iTunes has become very popular since it’s’ first launch back in January of 2001. Now seven years on Apple iTunes has surpassed Walmart in becoming the largest music retailer in the US.

NPD, market research firm claimed that iTunes had beaten Walmart in the January and February period, calculating that people would download 12 songs at a time, which is approximately equal to a complete album. The launch of iTunes has seen great success in attracting many customers to use the software, with over 4 billion songs sold to date signifying iTunes dominance over the music download market.

However, Apple iTunes do face a growing number of competitors such as, MySpace, eMusic and Napster. MySpace is the latest social networking site to have joined the market, with a recent launch of the new music service in cooperation with Sony BMG, Universal and Warner. It also allows their users to listen to music, as well as watch videos, free of charge with the option of paying for music that they choose to download.

Apple iTunes success in the music market has risen fast. This has proved that prefer to download music and buy using the iTunes software. Over 50 million people use iTunes to download music, which is proof of the distinct change in music retailing.
